Changing your furnace filters is the easiest things you can do to keep your heating and cooling system running in tip top order. This simple act keeps your system running efficiently, avoids system breakdowns and can lengthen the lifespan of your system. For this reason, it is extremely important you change your filters on time. So how often do we need to change our filters?

Filter Type

Filter types are determined by their MERV Rating. A MERV Rating, Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, measures the effectiveness of filtration. The higher the MERV Rating the more effective the filter is at not allowing air particulates to pass through it. The MERV rating also determines generally how often to change your furnace filter. MERV 8 filters should be changed every 3-4 months, MERV 10 & 11 filters every 6 months and MERV 16 filters every year.

Household Factors

There are certain household factors that could change how often to change furnace filter. First, do you have an air purifier? If so, you will end up needing to replace your furnace filters more often. Air purifiers improve the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in your home because they clump the air particulates together so they get stuck in your furnace filter and aren’t circulated throughout your home.

We recommend doing a quick visual check on your filter every 3-4 weeks if you are unsure about your furnace filter replacement frequency.

1. Make Sure you check your filter at least once a month.

The purpose of the furnace filter is to prevent dust and hair from clogging your furnace. But after the filter has been in place for a while, it gets full of debris. Your furnace then has to work harder to pull air through the densely packed filter, which places extra stress on the furnace.

How often you need to change your filter will depend on a lot of things. How often you clean, whether or not you have pets, and recent renovations can all make a difference. A good rule of thumb is to check the filter monthly for debris. If you can see hair and dust on the surface, then replace the filter or wash it if it’s the reusable kind.

2. Should you use a Programmable Thermostat

They are one of the best ways of reducing your monthly gas bill, and they often pay for themselves in one year. They also reduce wear and tear on your furnace.

A simple 5-day/2-day programmable thermostat is not expensive, and it will allow you to set up a schedule for weekdays and weekends that will lower the temperature when you’re away from home or sleeping. We are really keen to using these new products because it helps regulate the cold and warmth within the house while you don’t have to.

3. Make Sure all Registers are Open and Free of Debris

In order to work efficiently a furnace needs to be able to freely circulate air around your home. Make sure none of your registers are blocked by furniture or have trapped dust in the cover. Be careful when purchasing decorative registers – they look great but can restrict as much as 50% of the air flow.

4. Keep the Area Around the Furnace Clear

Most furnaces are kept in the basement, where we also love to store extra belongings. It’s really important to keep a three to five foot area around your furnace completely clear of stored items. This is a safety issue because there is burning gas in the furnace. But it also helps the furnace run smoother because air can circulate freely.

5. Curtains are a Great Way to Save Energy

Strategically using your curtains can make a noticeable difference in your energy bill. By closing them at night, you can prevent heat loss to the cold outdoors.

Opening them in the day on south or west-facing windows allows warm sunshine to enter and heat the inside of your home, just like with a car left in a parking lot. On any north windows, try to keep them closed, even during the day.

6. Get Regular Furnace Tune Ups

Make sure you have your furnace inspected and tuned up every year to ensure its running at peak efficiency. One faulty part can place strain on the rest of the system, and can lead to sudden breakdowns.

7. Use Ceiling Fans

It may sound odd to use a fan in the winter, but they can help even out the overall warmth of your air. Heat naturally rises, and tends to collect near the ceiling. Running your ceiling fan on low to push the hot air down to the floor works especially well in rooms with vaulted ceilings.

8. Bake More in the Winter Months

Give your furnace a break by using the oven more. It will heat the entire kitchen area and may help heat your entire ground floor. There are other benefits too: not only will you feel better with a nice home-cooked meal, your house will smell great.

9. Decorative Insulation

Carpeting and area rugs on floors help insulate against drafts. They also feel great underfoot, help with soundproofing, and make us feel warmer because they’re so cozy looking.

10. Keep a Good Humidity Level

Most people notice that the air in our homes tends to be really dry in winter. It’s not only drying on skin and throats, but it can make us feel colder than we really are. Using a humidifier to bring your humidity level up to about 40% will help transfer heat better. You can lower the setting on the thermostat and not notice it. More humidity is also better for wood floors and furniture, and can help prevent asthma and allergy attacks.

11. Make Sure your Garage Door is Sealed

The garage is one of the biggest culprits of energy loss in the modern home. Make sure the garage door is touching all the way down and there aren’t any drafts around the sides are top.

Carbon Monoxide Can Poison And Kill With Little Or No Warning

carbon-monoxideCarbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of fatal poisonings in North America. Exposure to high concentrations can cause death in just a few minutes.

Confusion — a symptom of exposure to this colorless, odorless gas — can interfere with a person’s ability to recognize their life is in danger.


Low Concentrations – shortage of breath on moderate exertion; slight headache; nausea; dizziness.

Higher Concentrations – severe headache; mental confusion, dizziness; impairment of vision and hearing; collapse or fainting on exertion.

Extreme Concentrations – unconsciousness, coma; death.

Any indoor workplace where engines are running presents a potential hazard. Workers must realize that fuel-powered machines can expose them to this deadly gas.

Workers in confined spaces, such as mines, can be exposed to CO — but CO can also be present in large buildings, as well as outdoor and well-ventilated areas. Emergency workers can be at risk; without a CO detector they may not realize the danger until too late. Farmers have succumbed to CO poisoning while using a gasoline pressure washer inside the barn.

The Silent Killer

CO is colorless, odorless and tasteless, making it almost impossible to detect. The symptoms of CO poisoning can be very vague, and they involve many of the body’s systems. But immediate diagnosis is critical.

CO blocks the absorption of oxygen into the bloodstream from the lungs, and poisons the red blood cells so they cannot carry oxygen. If body tissues do not receive a constant supply of oxygen, they stop functioning. The brain is extremely vulnerable to oxygen deprivation. Most of the early symptoms of CO poisoning are the result of brain malfunction from the lack of oxygen.

Breathing CO in high concentrations can cause a feeling of tightness across the forehead, headache, throbbing in the temples, weariness or dizziness. If a person remains in the contaminated area, more serious symptoms will develop: nausea and vomiting, loss of strength and muscular control, increased breathing rate and a slowing pulse, and, eventually, death. Exposure to an extremely high concentration can cause rapid collapse and death within a few minutes. Heavy cigarette smokers are at a higher risk than non-smokers.

The reverse process, releasing CO from the body, is very slow (although it can be accelerated by breathing pure oxygen). This is why the symptoms of poisoning do not clear up after the casualty is moved to fresh air. After-effects of severe CO poisoning can occur during recovery,such as headache and dizziness, blurred vision, varying degrees of pain, loss of memory, lack of interest, confusion, and tremors. Very severe cases of poisoning can result in pneumonia or permanent brain damage. There have been cases of deaths from CO poisoning even after an apparent recovery.

Carbon monoxide is classed as a potential hazard to reproductive health. Reports indicate that women exposed to CO during pregnancy have a higher rate of miscarriage, stillbirth and low birth weight. In men, genetic damage to reproductive cells, loss of potency, and abnormal sperm have been reported.

CO vapors are highly flammable, and can also create a fire and explosion hazard. The explosion hazards are at certain concentrations.


The best way to recognize the presence of this deadly gas before a serious situation develops is to have a CO detector in any work area that may present a hazard.

Wherever possible, avoid operating fuel-powered machinery indoors. If this is not possible, you can control or limit exposure to CO by properly maintaining potential sources such as furnaces and internal combustion engines. Always use catalytic converters where they apply, and provide sufficient general and local exhaust ventilation to maintain CO levels below established acceptable limits.

Always use proper respiratory equipment when working in confined spaces where carbon monoxide might be a hazard. Wear an approved airline respirator or a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). When selecting a respirator, consider both the concentration of the gas and the duration of exposure.

First Aid

Seek medical attention immediately if anyone shows symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as a severe headache, dizziness and nausea. Take the exposed person into the fresh air as quickly as possible. Give artificial respiration if breathing has stopped, and administer oxygen if available.

If you must rescue a person from a contaminated area, wear an airline respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus. A rescue team has to have at least two people: a rescurer and an observer. They must always be connected to a lifeline and harness.

Carbon monoxide is a very toxic gas that has to be treated with extreme caution. Workers who may be exposed to it must know the sources and symptoms, how to protect themselves, and how to respond in case of an emergency.

How To Save Money On Your Air-Conditioning Bill

Here you’ll find strategies to help you save energy during the spring and summer when the weather is warm and you are trying to keep your home cool. Some of the tips below are free and can be used on a daily basis to increase your savings; others are simple and inexpensive actions you can take to ensure maximum savings through the spring and summer.



  • If you live in a climate where it cools off at night, turn off your cooling system and open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to capture the cool air.
  • Install window coverings to prevent heat gain through your windows.


  • Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
  • Keep your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lower the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling. A programmable thermostat can make it easy to set back your temperature.
  • Avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.


  • If you use air conditioning, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort.
  • Turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room. Remember that fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind chill effect.
  • When you shower or take a bath, use the bathroom fan to remove the heat and humidity from your home. Your laundry room might also benefit from spot ventilation. Make sure bathroom and kitchen fans are vented to the outside (not just to the attic).
  • Schedule regular maintenance for your cooling equipment.
  • Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your room air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  • Vacuum registers regularly to remove any dust buildup. Ensure that furniture and other objects are not blocking the airflow through your registers.


  • On hot days, avoid using the oven; cook on the stove, use a microwave oven, or grill outside.
  • Install efficient lighting that runs cooler. Only about 10% to 15% of the electricity that incandescent lights consume results in light—the rest is turned into heat.
  • Take advantage of daylight instead of artificial lighting, but avoid direct sunlight.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. Consider air drying both dishes and clothing.
  • Take short showers instead of baths.
  • Minimize activities that generate a lot of heat, such as running a computer, burning open flames, running a dishwasher, and using hot devices such as curling irons or hair dryers. Even stereos and televisions will add some heat to your home.
  • Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from leaking into your home.
  • Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows.

Making the above changes to your home will help you reduce the amount of energy needed to keep you cool during the spring and summer.  Less energy use will save you money on your hydro bill and also help the environment.
